The origin of the town's name is found in the Torre de los Molinos (Tower of the Mills), later called Torre Pimentel after a soldier who helped Ferdinand and Isabella conquer Malaga at the end of the 15th century. La Torre del Molino o atalaya de Torre Cardela se sitúa a más de 1200 metros de altitud sobre el nivel del mar. Es por tanto, una de las atalayas a mayor altura de Granada. Corona un pequeño cerro llamado del molino, rodeado de olivares y cultivos de cereal. Al parecer el baluarte fue transformado, en época cristiana, en un molino de viento.
